Why friendships could be good for your gut

<p dir="ltr">As well as being good for our mental health, it seems that having plenty of friends can be good for the health of our gut, a new study says.</p> <p dir="ltr">Scientists looked at a group of Rhesus Macaques living on Cayo Santiago, an island off the coast of Puerto Rico, and found that the more sociable primate had more beneficial bacteria and less harmful bacteria than less social monkeys.</p> <p dir="ltr">To measure just how social the monkeys were, the researchers measured the time each monkey spent grooming or being groomed by others, as well as the number of grooming partners they had.</p> <p dir="ltr">“Macaques are highly social animals and grooming is their main way of making and maintaining relationships, so grooming provides a good indicator of social interactions,” Dr Kali Watson, a cognitive scientist at the University of Colorado, said.</p> <p dir="ltr">They also collected faecal samples from the monkeys and performed DNA sequencing to measure the composition and diversity of gut microbes that were present.</p> <p dir="ltr">“Engagement in social interactions was positively related to the abundance of certain gut microbes with beneficial immunological functions, and negatively related to the abundance of potentially pathogenic members of the microbiota,” Dr Philip Burnet, who researches the influence of the gut microbiome on brain health at the University of Oxford, said.</p> <p dir="ltr">They found that the most sociable monkeys had higher levels of protective bacteria, including <em>Faecalibacterium</em>, which has anti-inflammatory properties, and <em>Prevotella</em>, which has been associated with better immunity against pathogens and anti-inflammatory effects.</p> <p><span id="docs-internal-guid-0dd63408-7fff-3ddf-b8be-419de6dceec8"></span></p> <p dir="ltr">Meanwhile, bacteria such as <em>Streptococcus</em>, which cause diseases such as strep throat and pneumonia, were found in greater abundance in the less social monkeys.</p> <p dir="ltr"><img src="https://oversixtydev.blob.core.windows.net/media/2022/12/monkey-guts1.jpg" alt="" width="1280" height="720" /></p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Image: Frontiers Press</em></p> <p dir="ltr">As for why this happens, the researchers proposed that it may be to do with the transmission of bacteria through physical contact, such as grooming.</p> <p dir="ltr">“The relationship between social behaviour and microbial abundances may be the direct result of social transmission of microbes, for example through grooming,” Dr Katerina Johnson, a researcher at the University of Oxford, said. </p> <p dir="ltr">“It could also be an indirect effect, as monkeys with fewer friends may be more stressed, which then affects the abundance of these microbes. </p> <p dir="ltr">“As well as behaviour influencing the microbiome, we also know it is a reciprocal relationship, whereby the microbiome can in turn affect the brain and behaviour.”</p> <p dir="ltr">The millions of bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms that live in our gut - and make up our <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/health/mind/your-gut-s-second-brain-may-have-evolved-before-your-head-s-brain">gut microbiome</a> - have become an area of interest for researchers, particularly when it comes to digestive health and the influence it has on our nervous system, in a relationship called the <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/health/mind/how-gut-bacteria-could-affect-your-mental-health">‘gut-brain axis’</a>.</p> <p dir="ltr">Previous studies have shown that the levels of different species of these organisms in our guts have been linked to depression, schizophrenia and even autoimmune conditions such as Crohn’s disease and colitis. The gut even creates neurotransmitters, hormones and other molecules the brain needs.</p> <p dir="ltr">With this study finding that being social can influence our gut, which in turn can influence our health more generally, it shows just how crucial social interactions are for our health.</p> <p dir="ltr">Dr Robin Dunbar, a psychology professor at the University of Oxford, said: “As our society is increasingly substituting online interactions for real-life ones, these important research findings underline the fact that as primates, we evolved not only in a social world but a microbial one as well.”</p> <p dir="ltr">The researchers published their findings in the journal <em><a href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fmicb.2022.1032495" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Frontiers in Microbiology</a></em>.</p> <p dir="ltr"><span id="docs-internal-guid-2a928ab1-7fff-d510-19e0-817d118030bc"></span></p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Image: Frontiers Press</em></p>

Celine Dion reveals shock diagnosis

<p dir="ltr">Céline Dion has revealed she has been diagnosed with a rare neurological condition and has cancelled her upcoming Courage world tour.</p> <p dir="ltr">The Canadian songstress shared the news during an emotional video on Instagram, informing fans that she has Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS), a rare disorder that affects the nervous symptom and causes extreme muscle stiffness and painful spasms.</p> <p dir="ltr">“Recently I’ve been diagnosed with a very rare neurological disorder called the stiff person syndrome, which affects 1 in a million people,” Dion said in the clip.</p> <p dir="ltr">"While we're still learning about this rare condition, we now know this is what's been causing all of the spasms that I've been having.</p> <p><span id="docs-internal-guid-11b08fca-7fff-f409-f618-2c1eb0a389b3"></span></p> <p dir="ltr">"Unfortunately these spasms affect every aspect of my daily life, sometimes causing difficulties when I walk and not allowing me to use my vocal chords to sing the way I'm used to."</p> <blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; Robbie Coltrane’s cause of death revealed

<p dir="ltr"><em>Harry Potter</em> star Robbie Coltrane’s cause of death has been revealed, after it emerged that the British actor suffered from multiple painful health conditions prior to his death aged 72.</p> <p dir="ltr">Coltrane died from several conditions including multiple organ failure, according to his death certificate, with<em> The Sun</em> reporting that he had been unwell for some time and had been battling diabetes and obesity.</p> <p dir="ltr">According to <em>The Mirror</em>, Coltrane passed away on October 14 of sepsis - an extreme reaction to an infection - a lower respiratory tract infection and heart block - when electrical impulses that control your heart beating are disrupted.</p> <p dir="ltr">The actor, who was born Anthony Robert McMillan and changed his name in the 1970s in tribute to jazz legend John Coltrane, had his death registered by his former wife Rhona Gemmell.</p> <p dir="ltr">He was a veteran Scottish actor with a host of acting credits to his name, including his most well-known role as Hagrid in the <em>Harry Potter</em> films, the starring role as Valentin Dmitrovich Zukovsky in <em>Golden Eye</em> and <em>The World Is Not Enough</em>, and as Samuel Johnson in <em>Blackadder the Third</em>.</p> <p dir="ltr">Coltrane was also a prominent face in the series <em>Cracker</em>, starring as Dr Eddie Fitzgerald during his airing between 1993 and 2006.</p> <p dir="ltr">Once a heavy drinker and with a past that included drug use, his friend and late actor John Sessions said Coltrane had a “strong self-destructive streak” and a “deep, driving melancholy”.</p> <p dir="ltr">“Booze is my undoing,” Coltrane once said. “I can drink a gallon of beer and not feel the least bit drunk.”</p> <p dir="ltr">In his later years, the star suffered from osteoarthritis that left him wheelchair-bound and in “constant pain”.</p> <p dir="ltr">“I was fighting pain 24 hours a day when I was in <em>National Treasure</em> and <em>Great Expectations</em>,” he told the <em>Daily Express </em>in 2020.</p> <p dir="ltr">“I had no cartilage in my knee. Your eyes could predict your risk of heart disease

<p dir="ltr">As well as being windows to the soul, <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/health/body/could-an-eye-test-predict-your-risk-of-heart-disease" target="_blank" rel="noopener">your eyes</a> could indicate your risk of developing heart disease according to new research.</p> <p dir="ltr">Scientists have developed imaging powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) that can predict cardiovascular disease and death just by looking at the network of veins and arteries in your retina.</p> <p dir="ltr">Their findings could pave the way for a non-invasive and highly effective test that could replace the blood tests and blood pressure measurements currently used.</p> <p dir="ltr">With previous studies finding that the width of the tiny veins and arteries in the retina may be an accurate, early indicator for circulatory diseases including heart disease, cardiovascular disease, stroke, and heart failure.</p> <p dir="ltr">But, it was unclear whether these findings apply to both men and women, prompting the researchers to develop an AI-enabled algorithm called QUARTZ (QUantitative Analysis of Retinal vessels Topology and siZe) to develop models for assessing whether combining imaging of the retina with known risk factors could predict vascular health and death.</p> <p dir="ltr">They then applied models the algorithm created to retinal images of 88,052 people that are stored in the UK’s BioBank, as well as 7411 participants in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer (EPIC)-Norfolk study, which tracked the health of participants for seven to nine years.</p> <p dir="ltr">The predictive model used known risk factors, including smoking, medical history, and age and was able to identify two-thirds of the participants who later died of circulatory disease who were most at risk.</p> <p dir="ltr">With retinal imaging already being common practice in the UK and US, the researchers argue that using changes to the retina and AI has the potential to reach a greater portion of the population than current testing methods.</p> <p dir="ltr">“[Retinal vasculature]is a microvascular marker, hence offers better prediction for circulatory mortality and stroke compared with [heart attack] which is more macrovascular, except perhaps in women,” they write.</p> <p dir="ltr">“In the general population it could be used as a non-contact form of systemic vascular health check, to triage those at medium-high risk of circulatory mortality for further clinical risk assessment and appropriate intervention.”</p> <p dir="ltr">Drs Ify Mordi and Emanuele Trucco of Scotland’s University of Dundee wrote in <a href="https://bjo.bmj.com/content/early/2022/09/12/bjo-2022-322517" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a separate editorial</a> that using changes to the retina to inform overall cardiovascular risk is “certainly attractive and intuitive” but is yet to form part of clinical practice.</p> <p dir="ltr">“Using retinal screening in this way would presumably require a significant increase in the number of ophthalmologists or otherwise trained assessors,” they write.</p> <p dir="ltr">“What is now needed is for ophthalmologists, cardiologists, primary care physicians and computer scientists to work together to design studies to determine whether using this information improves clinical outcome, and, if so, to work with regulatory bodies, scientific societies and healthcare systems to optimise clinical workflows and enable practical implementation in routine practice.”</p> <p dir="ltr">The study was published in the <em><a href="https://bjo.bmj.com/content/early/2022/08/23/bjo-2022-321842" target="_blank" rel="noopener">British Journal of Ophthalmology</a></em>.</p> <p><span id="docs-internal-guid-0bda2897-7fff-22ea-56e7-d43631ebe839"></span></p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Image: Getty Images</em></p>

Inhalers and other steroids linked to changes in the brain

<p dir="ltr">If you’ve been diagnosed with asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (COPD), ezcema or even Crohn’s disease, you’ve likely been prescribed some form of medical steroid to treat it.</p> <p dir="ltr">However, Dutch scientists are calling for more awareness about potential side effects of using medical steroids, as well as research into alternative treatment options, after they found a link between using these medications and changes in the brain structure and volume.</p> <p dir="ltr">Glucocorticoids, a class of synthetic steroids found in inhalers and other medicines, fight inflammation in the body, making them highly effective for treating autoimmune diseases, where your body triggers inflammation by mistake and results in your immune system attacking healthy cells as if they were viruses or bacteria. </p> <p dir="ltr">This immunoprotective quality has made them one of the most frequently prescribed drugs globally.</p> <p dir="ltr">But, both systemic and inhaled steroid use is associated with abnormalities in brain structure and shrinkage of particular areas, according to previous research.</p> <p dir="ltr">With this research focusing on small groups of people with specific conditions, a team of Dutch researchers decided to investigate whether these side effects were seen in the broader population, with their findings published in the journal <em><a href="https://doi.org/10.1136/bmjopen-2022-062446" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BMJ Open</a></em>.</p> <p dir="ltr">Using data from the UK Biobank - a database of genetic and health information from half a million people available to researchers across the world - the team looked to see whether there were differences in the brains of users and non-users of glucocorticoids.</p> <p dir="ltr">After comparing the brain scans of 222 people who use systemic steroids, 557 using inhaled steroids, and 24,106 people who didn’t use either, they found that use of medical steroids was linked to less intact white brain matter in comparison to scans of non-users.</p> <p dir="ltr">The white matter in our brains is made up of bundles of nerve fibres covered in a fatty substance called myelin, which gives these areas their white colour. White matter is part of the central nervous system, helping to connect different areas of grey matter to each other and send messages between them. These parts of the brain affect how we learn and how our brains function.</p> <p dir="ltr">Participants in the study also filled out a questionnaire to assess aspects of their mood over the previous fortnight, as the team wanted to know if steroid use was also linked to changes in processing speed or emotional responses.</p> <p dir="ltr">They found that systemic use of steroids was associated with a larger caudate - a C-shaped structure in the brain that is involved in associative and procedural learning, working memory, speaking in multiple languages, cognition and emotional processing.</p> <p dir="ltr">Meanwhile, the use of inhaled steroids was linked to a smaller amygdala, another structure in the brain made of grey matter that is involved in processing emotions, particularly for strong emotions such as fear.</p> <p dir="ltr">From the questionnaire, the team found systemic steroid users performed worse than non-users when it came to the test measuring processing speed, and that they reported significantly more symptoms of depression, apathy, restlessness, fatigue and lethargy.</p> <p dir="ltr">Inhaled steroid users also reported more tiredness and lethargy, but to a lesser degree than systemic users.</p> <p dir="ltr">But, the researchers stress that their findings don’t necessarily mean that medical steroids cause the changes seen in the brain.</p> <p dir="ltr">“Although a causal relation between glucocorticoid use and changes in the brain is likely based on the present and previous studies, the cross-sectional nature of this study does not allow for formal conclusions on causality,” they caution.</p> <p dir="ltr">Instead, they say the relationship may explain some of the side effects associated with long-term use of the medications, including anxiety, depression, mania and delirium.</p> <p dir="ltr">“While it remains unclear whether the observed effect sizes have clinical consequences for the population of glucocorticoid users as a whole, these findings are remarkable given the common neuropsychiatric side effects of synthetic glucocorticoids,” the researchers write.</p> <p dir="ltr">They conclude that widespread reduction in the integrity of white matter in the brain is associated with both systemic and inhaled steroid use, and argue that this could be an underlying contributor to neuropsychiatric side effects that patients using these steroids can experience.</p> <p><span id="docs-internal-guid-954fbbed-7fff-5e9e-2f6e-456381994a6a"></span></p> <p dir="ltr">Given the widespread use of medical steroids, they add that it’s important for doctors and patients to know about the possible effects they can have on the brain and that more research should be done into alternative options for treatment.</p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Image: Getty Images</em></p>

6 ways doodling can make you smarter, happier and more productive

<p><strong>Doodling and attention</strong></p> <p>Like a perpetually active toddler, the human brain constantly demands stimulation. When you’re in a setting that’s noticeably devoid of stimuli (say, on a long plane ride, or in an ultra-boring meeting) your brain compensates by creating its own stimulation in the form of daydreams. And while zoning out is a fine way to pass the time, it’s a dismal way to absorb information. Doodling, on the other hand, engages the brain’s planning and concentration centres just enough to keep you living in the moment – and according to some researchers, it may be even more effective for retaining information than active listening. In one study in the journal Applied Cognitive Psychology, subjects who monitored a monotonous phone message for names of party guests recalled 29 percent more information later if they were doodling during the call. Meanwhile, in a 2012 study of science students who were asked to draw what they learned during lectures and reading sessions, doodlers not only retained more information, but also reported more enjoyment and engagement with the material.</p> <p><strong>Doodling and memory</strong></p> <p>In general, multitasking lowers cognitive performance on tasks, makes you think harder than you have to, and decreases productivity. However, recent experiments out of Waterloo University suggest that doodling might be an exception. In a series of tests, subjects were given 40 seconds to either draw a word in detail or write it by hand as many times as they could. When quizzed later, doodlers recalled more than twice as many words as writers did. Give this a try in your next meeting: Don’t just write down the crucial points – draw them.</p> <p><strong>Doodling and mindfulness</strong></p> <p><span style="background-color: #ffffff; color: #444444; font-family: Raleway, sans-serif, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial; font-size: 16px;">So, doodlers, your pen is moving and your brain is engaged – do you feel the zen yet? According to Jesse Prinz, a philosophy professor at City University of New York Graduate Center, doodling keeps participants in a state of “pure listening” that borders on meditation. “Doodling helps hit that sweet spot between listening too much and listening too little,” Prinz says. “It keeps you in a state where your mind can’t wander, and your mind can’t also reflect or think more deeply about what you’re hearing… it’s to such a great extent that if I do not doodle, I find myself having difficulty concentrating.” With your mind so engaged, it becomes hard not to feel yourself in the present moment. And with meditation comes relaxation.</span></p> <p><strong>Doodling and your mood</strong></p> <p>Beyond the kindergarten wisdom that drawing is just plain fun, there may be psychological forces improving your mood when you put doodles to paper. The key: keep it positive. In a 2008 study where participants were asked to either draw something that was making them unhappy (to “vent” their emotions) or something that made them happy, those who focused on the positive showed a greater short-term elevation in mood than those who vented. So when you doodle through your next boring meeting, draw yourself on a train to your dream holiday location instead of drawing your blowhard boss tied to tracks.</p> <p><strong>Doodling and creativity</strong></p> <p>This may seem like a no-brainer, but creative acts lead to creative thinking. Take this case study from a 2014 paper published at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology: An architecture student hit a creative block while designing a new kindergarten building. To ease his mind, the student began habitually doodling his own signature, larger and larger. As the doodles grew in size, the student began seeing an outline for the building in the negative spaces between the letters of his name. The doodle soon became the architectural sketch on which he based his building.</p> <p><strong>Doodling and stress</strong></p> <p>Creative activities have been proven across dozens of studies to reduce stress, decrease negative emotions, and even improve the health of people who participate in them. The end product doesn’t even have to be a masterpiece; as the great doodling philosopher Charles Schulz wrote, “the joy is in the playing.” In no form of art is this more true than doodling, a game where your brain talks to itself by using your hand as a medium. There is no concern for the end product, or who else might see it. It’s a boy! Doctor leaps into action to deliver baby mid-flight

<p dir="ltr">A pregnant woman has unexpectedly given birth mid-flight, prompting a fellow passenger and doctor to set up a temporary maternity unit to help deliver the baby.</p><p dir="ltr">The Ghanian woman, who gave her name as GG, was on board a flight from Ghana to the US on January 29 when she prematurely gave birth. </p><p dir="ltr">After a Ghanian doctor delivered her baby, converting the plane’s business class area into a temporary maternity ward. </p><p dir="ltr">The woman was then met with “shock and applause” from those around her.</p><p dir="ltr">However, she was expecting to give birth later in February, an eye witness told the <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-60219964" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BBC</a>.</p><p dir="ltr">Journalist Nancy Adobea Anane, who was also on the flight, told BBC News Pidgin that an on-board announcement for medical assistance initially prompted confusion among passengers.</p><p dir="ltr">“Most of them heard the call for assistance from medical personnel but didn’t know what was going on,” she said.</p><p><span id="docs-internal-guid-650fd780-7fff-5aa7-2acd-d96975929135"></span></p><p dir="ltr">“I became anxious for the safety of the baby and mother, and the possibility of a detour for an emergency landing.”</p><p dir="ltr"><img src="https://oversixtydev.blob.core.windows.net/media/2022/02/doctor-baby.jpg" alt="" width="976" height="549" /></p><p dir="ltr"><em>Dr Stephen Ansah-Addo (left) helped deliver the baby on route to the US. Image: Nancy Adobea Anane (BBC)</em></p><p dir="ltr">Dr Stephen Ansah-Addo, who practises in the US, heard the request for help and set about delivering the baby.</p><p dir="ltr">“Myself, a nurse and the flight attendants … took [the mother] slowly through the process and she delivered a beautiful baby boy,” Dr Ansah-Addo said.</p><p dir="ltr">Ms Anane recalled that the birth was quite quick, with the baby boy entering the world within 45 minutes of the birth process starting.</p><p dir="ltr">“Her delivery was quick, like 30 to 45 minutes,” she said, which was then followed by “screaming and the familiar cry of the baby”.</p><p dir="ltr">Paramedics met the new mother and baby once the plane landed in Washington, where they received further care.</p><p dir="ltr">With the chances of going into labour naturally higher after 37 weeks of pregnancy according to the UK’s National Health Service, some airlines prohibit pregnant women from flying after this point.</p><p dir="ltr"><span id="docs-internal-guid-dc3b6e6f-7fff-952e-2c6f-b4a19f56c2e2"></span></p><p dir="ltr"><em>Image: Nancy Adobea Anane (BBC)</em></p>

Old-time home remedies</strong></p> <p>Researchers have produced hundreds of studies in the past five years about the effectiveness of home remedies, but not all the old-time solutions really help. That’s why this list focuses on treatments with evidence to back them up. Remember that even natural cures can interact with medications. If you take pills regularly or have a chronic health condition, check with your doctor before trying these.</p> <p><strong>2. Buttermilk for age spots</strong></p> <p>You can skip the expensive skin creams. This rich by-product of butter contains lactic acid and ascorbic acid. One study showed that this combination lightened age spots more effectively than lactic acid alone. Apply to the spots with a cotton ball, then rinse with water after 20 minutes.</p> <p><strong>3. Comfrey for back pain</strong></p> <p>This medicinal plant has been used for centuries to treat joint and muscle pain. Ground flaxseed for constipation</strong></p> <p>“It’s almost as if nature tailor-made ground flaxseed to relieve constipation,” says gastroenterologist Dr Will Bulsiewicz. “It is a great source of both insoluble and soluble fibre, which add bulk to the stool and promote the growth of good bacteria.” Ground flaxseed is an excellent source of plant-based omega-3 fatty acids, which are known to help soften stool and relieve constipation. Aim for two to three tablespoons a day as part of a fibre-rich diet.</p> <p><strong>6. Thyme tea for coughs</strong></p> <p>Thyme is a natural expectorant that relaxes the respiratory tract and loosens mucus. Studies have found that using thyme in combination with primrose or ivy relieves the frequency and duration of coughs. To make thyme tea, place two tablespoons of fresh thyme (or one tablespoon dried) in a cup of hot water. Allow it to steep, then drain out the herb. Add honey to taste.</p> <p><strong>7. Blackberry tea for diarrhoea</strong></p> <p>Blackberries are rich in tannins, substances that can tighten mucous membranes in the intestinal tract. They have long been used as a treatment for diarrhoea. World in shock as man catches COVID twice

<p>The world is in shock as researchers in Hong Kong say they have "proved" the world's first known documented case of a human catching coronavirus twice despite a successful recovery.</p> <p>The case involved a 33-year-old man who was initially infected in April and recovered with only mild symptoms. Researchers from the Department of Microbiology at the University of Hong Kong said that he has been reinfected within just under five months.</p> <p>The man's second infection was detected after an airport screening after his return to Hong Kong from Spain earlier this month.</p> <p>Researchers described the strains as "clearly different".</p> <p>The scientists hypothesised the asymptomatic symptom might indicate "subsequent infections may be milder".</p> <p>"An apparently young and healthy patient had a second case of COVID-19 infection which was diagnosed 4.5 months after the first episode," University of Hong Kong researchers said in a statement.</p> <p>The findings are equally alarming because it suggests the threat of reinfection to coronavirus exists "even if patients have acquired immunity via natural infection or via vaccination," they said.</p> <p>"Many believe that recovered COVID-19 patients have immunity against reinfection because most developed a serum neutralising antibody response.</p> <p>"However, there is evidence that some patients have waning antibody level after a few months.</p> <p>"Our findings suggest that the SARS-CoV-2 may persist in the global human population as is the case for other common cold-associated human coronaviruses, even if patients have acquired immunity via natural infection," they said.</p> <p>"Since the immunity can be short-lasting after natural infection, vaccination should also be considered for those with one episode of infection," they said.</p> <p>The IT worker was asymptomatic initially but genomic sequencing shows that he has been infected by two virus strains.</p> <p>The second strain was a close match to the one travelling across Europes in July and August.</p> <p>What the findings mean for potential vaccines is yet to be seen, but the World Health Organisation's technical lead on COVID-19 Maria von Kerkhove said that there isn't enough data to understand the implications and urged people to not "jump to any conclusions".</p> <p>"It's very important that we document this and that any countries that do this, if sequencing can be done, that would be very, very, helpful," she said.</p> <p>"But we need to not jump to any conclusions, to say even if this is the first documented case of reinfection, it is possible, of course."</p> <p>More than 24 million people have been infected worldwide with coronavirus.</p>

New swine flu with pandemic potential found in China

<p>Researchers in China have discovered a strain of swine flu that is capable of triggering another pandemic.</p> <p>A report published in peer-reviewed science journal <em>Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</em> earlier this week identified the G4 EA H1N1 strain of flu, which is genetically descended from the H1N1 strain that caused a pandemic in 2009.</p> <p>It has “all the essential hallmarks of a candidate pandemic virus”, scientists at Chinese universities and China’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention said in the study.</p> <p>Researchers took 30,000 nasal swabs from pigs between 2011 and 2018. A total of 179 swine flu viruses were isolated, the majority of which were a new kind that has been dominant among pigs since 2016.</p> <p>Following various experiments, G4 was found to be highly infectious, replicating in human cells and causing more severe symptoms in ferrets than other viruses do.</p> <p>Any immunity humans gain from exposure to seasonal flu does not protect against G4, <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/new-swine-flu-china-researchers-pandemic/" target="_blank">tests also showed</a>.</p> <p>As many as 4.4 per cent of the general population appeared to have been exposed to the virus, therefore showing that it has passed from animals to humans. There is no evidence yet that the virus can be passed between humans.</p> <p>“Controlling the prevailing G4 EA H1N1 viruses in pigs and close monitoring in human populations, especially the workers in swine industry, should be urgently implemented,” the study authors said.</p> <p>The World Health Organisation will read the Chinese report carefully, spokesman Christian Lindmeier told a Geneva briefing on Tuesday.</p> <p>“It … highlights we cannot let our guard down on influenza and need to be vigilant and continue surveillance even in the coronavirus pandemic,” he said.</p> <p>There is no imminent threat of a new pandemic despite the virus’ capability to infect humans, said Carl Bergstrom, a biologist at the University of Washington.</p> <p>“There’s no evidence that G4 is circulating in humans, despite five years of extensive exposure,” he said on Twitter. “That’s the key context to keep in mind.”</p> <p>The new swine flu is still “in the stage of examination”, said Anthony Fauci, the director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.</p> <p>It’s not “an immediate threat where you’re seeing infections, but it’s something we need to keep our eye on, just the way we did in 2009 with the emergence of the swine flu.”</p>

Dismantling the police: lessons from three places that tried it

<p>The killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officers sparked protests across the US and brought the Black Lives Matter movement back to the forefront of American politics. The intensity of these protests means that previously unthinkable demands for radical reform are now on the table.</p> <p>The defunding of America’s heavily armed police forces, a long-term demand of racial justice activists, looks increasingly achievable. In early June, a veto-proof supermajority of Minneapolis City council members supported efforts to <a href="https://theappeal.org/minneapolis-city-council-members-announce-intent-to-disband-the-police-department-invest-in-proven-community-led-public-safety/">“dismantle” and “abolish”</a> the police department and replace it with a new system of community policing. In Los Angeles, the mayor put forward a proposal to <a href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-06-03/lapd-budget-unrest-garcetti">divert between US$100 million and US$150 million</a> from the police department to invest in jobs and education for communities of colour.</p> <p>What this would look like in practice is still unclear. While reforms need to be matched to the specific national context and goals, there are a number of countries that have attempted to defund, demobilise and radically reform their police forces.</p> <p>Although this often occurs following armed conflict, the experience of three places in particular can provide important lessons for today.</p> <p><strong>Iraq and de-Ba’athification</strong></p> <p>Following the 2003 occupation of Iraq, the US ambassador Paul Bremer took the decision to “de-Ba’athify” the Iraqi state by removing civil servants from the era of Saddam Hussein en masse. US military planners <a href="https://www.jstor.org/stable/resrep12200">had assumed</a> they would inherit a functioning state, including the security system. However de-Ba’athification changed this by essentially disbanding the Iraqi security forces, leaving its personnel with no re-integration programme or alternative source of work.</p> <p>This top-down imposition created <a href="https://doi.org/10.1080/02684521003588120">a large pool of unemployed men</a>, many of whom retained their access to arms and explosives in the post-war chaos. Many felt humiliated and hostile to the US forces, which <a href="https://books.google.co.uk/books/about/Surge.html?id=9dQ_AQAAQBAJ&amp;redir_esc=y">researchers have argued</a> led to the <a href="https://books.google.co.uk/books/about/Surge.html?id=9dQ_AQAAQBAJ&amp;redir_esc=y">political basis for the subsequent Iraqi insurgency</a>. From the elite level to the rank-and-file, these newly desperate men helped to create and sustain the insurgency, with many of Hussein’s ex-generals and spies going on to <a href="https://time.com/3900753/isis-iraq-syria-army-united-states-military/">direct the activities of the Islamic State group</a>.</p> <p>The Minneapolis Police Department will not be demobilised into an environment of generalised chaos, foreign occupation and sectarian violence. Nevertheless, the blunders in post-war Iraq provide a clear lesson: you shouldn’t take jobs away from people who are trained in the use of coercion and violence without some idea of how to retrain and reintegrate them.</p> <p>In the US context this would be unlikely to lead to outright civil conflict as in Iraq – although anything is possible. A more realistic worry is that the police could simply move sideways into private security, a <a href="https://pulitzercenter.org/reporting/industry-inequality-why-world-obsessed-private-security">quickly expanding sector</a> that was ironically trialled <a href="https://www.brookings.edu/articles/the-dark-truth-about-blackwater/">with horrifying results</a> in Iraq and Afghanistan. The extended use of private security on US soil could be even <a href="https://doi.org/10.1080/0731129X.2012.740907">more violent and less accountable</a> than the current system of policing.</p> <p><strong>Guatemala – rebranding not reform</strong></p> <p>The end of the 36-year-long Guatemalan civil war in 1996 saw an ambitious peace programme. It promised to demilitarise the country’s internal security by transitioning from a brutal military-led counterinsurgency to a civilian police force. However, in practice the reforms failed to effectively move past the legacy of wartime repression.</p> <p>One important factor was that the newly democratic government adopted wholesale the model of the Spanish Guardia Civil, a highly militarised internal security force. The Guardia Civil has been used for internal repression in Spain since its <a href="https://english.elpais.com/elpais/2014/10/20/inenglish/1413807111_949949.html">inception</a> in the mid-19th century, to the recent attempts to <a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/catalonia-independence-referendum-catalan-police-storm-ministries-arrested-josep-maria-jov-a7956581.html">target the Catalan independence movement</a>.</p> <p>Guatemala’s decision to follow the Spanish model ran against the idea of a new policing approach even at the time. The reasoning behind the government’s decision was unclear, but bears the hallmarks of the continued influence <a href="https://www.jstor.org/stable/3339023">of the Guatemalan military establishment</a>. The outcome is a security state that is still extremely violent towards both <a href="https://www.insightcrime.org/news/brief/extrajudicial-killings-on-the-rise-in-guatemala/">suspected criminals</a> and <a href="https://nacla.org/news/2018/06/21/terror-guatemala">political activists</a>.</p> <p>The lesson for the US here is that meaningful reform requires a clear sense of direction rather than simply a re-packaging of the existing model. Beyond this, it also shows the dangers of a fragmented security system. Changing the practices of local police forces will be less effective if agencies such as immigration and customs enforcement are able to continue engaging <a href="https://www.aclu.org/issues/immigrants-rights/ice-and-border-patrol-abuses">in widespread violence</a>. This is a particular vulnerability for the US, given its <a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/0022343320913089">overlapping security agencies</a> which lack centralised Federal control.</p> <p><strong>Bougainville and bottom-up reform</strong></p> <p>More positive lessons can be taken from the experiences of countries that have radically re-orientated their policing model away from retribution and towards reconciliation and restoration. The autonomous region of Bougainville, <a href="https://www.npr.org/2019/12/30/789697304/trying-to-form-the-worlds-newest-country-bougainville-has-a-road-ahead?t=1591805961684">likely to become the world’s newest nation</a>, used the end of a secessionist conflict with Papua New Guinea in 1998 as an opportunity to return to a form of community justice which emphasised honesty, forgiveness and rehabilitation.</p> <p>This functioned as a way of overcoming wartime trauma and encouraging reconciliation but was also extended out as a general policing model. This approach, while supported by international donors and peacekeepers, relied on long-standing local customs and practice. The result is a society which, while not problem free, is <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/273755447_Bougainville_Community_Crime_Survey_2006">significantly safer</a> than the rest of Papua New Guinea. Crucially, the community-based police force enjoys <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/13533312.2013.853961">broad popular support</a> among previously victimised rural communities.</p> <p>The US can’t replicate the traditional cultural practice of Bougainville, but it can learn the lessons from its experience. Rather than imposing a particular model, local politicians and international peacekeepers empowered local people to take control of their own safety and security. A chemical engineer explains: What makes pepper spray so intense? And is it a tear gas?

<p>In recent weeks, the world has looked on as governments use chemical irritants to control protesters and riots. Whether it’s tear gas, pepper spray, mace or pepper balls, all have one thing in common: they’re chemical weapons.</p> <p>Chemical warfare agents have been used twice in Sydney in the past week alone. Police <a href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-06-07/sydney-police-defend-pepper-spray-use-on-protesters/12330558">pepper-sprayed</a> demonstrators at Central Station, following Saturday’s major Black Lives Matter protest.</p> <p>The next day, tear gas <a href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-06-08/tear-gas-fired-into-exercise-yard-of-sydney-long-bay-jail/12332572">was used</a> to break up a fight at Long Bay jail, as prison guards filled an exercise yard with tear gas canisters – also impacting nearby residents.</p> <p>These events followed the deployment of <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2020/06/05/politics/park-police-tear-gas/index.html">chemical riot control agents</a> – specifically “pepper bombs” – in Washington DC last week. They were used to clear protesters from a public park so President Donald Trump could walk from the White House to a nearby church for a photo opportunity.</p> <p>The White House made a highlight reel to celebrate Trump’s heroic walk across the street for his bible photo op...</p> <p>US Attorney General William Barr said “<a href="https://www.factcheck.org/2020/06/the-continuing-tear-gas-debate/">there was no tear gas used</a>”, claiming “pepper spray is not a chemical irritant. It’s not chemical.”</p> <p>I’m a chemical engineer and chemist who studies chemicals in the environment. So I thought I’d clear the air about what makes pepper spray such a powerful chemical irritant, and a chemical weapon.</p> <p><strong>What’s inside pepper spray?</strong></p> <p>The active compounds in pepper spray are collectively known as capsaicinoids. They are given the military symbol OC, for “oleoresin capsicum”.</p> <p>The most important chemical in OC is capsaicin. This is derived from chilli peppers in a chemical process that dissolves and concentrates it into a liquid. Capsaicin is the same compound that makes chillies hot, but in an intense, weaponised form.</p> <p>Not all capsaicinoids are obtained naturally. One called nonivamide (also known as PAVA or pelargonic acid vanillylamide) is mostly made by humans. PAVA is an <a href="https://cot.food.gov.uk/committee/committee-on-toxicity/cotstatements/cotstatementsyrs/cotstatements2002/pavastatement">intense irritant</a> used in <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/society/2018/dec/09/pepper-spray-used-in-non-violent-situations-in-prison-pilot">artificial pepper spray</a>.</p> <p><strong>Is pepper spray a tear gas?</strong></p> <p>We’ve established pepper spray is a chemical, but is it also a kind of tear gas?</p> <p>“<a href="https://emergency.cdc.gov/agent/riotcontrol/factsheet.asp">Tear gas</a>” is an informal term and a bit of a misnomer, because it isn’t a gas. Rather, tear gas refers to any weaponised irritant used to immobilise people.</p> <p>More specifically, tear gas is often used to describe weapons that disperse their irritants in the air either as liquid aerosol droplets (such as <a href="https://www.popularmechanics.com/science/health/a28904691/how-tear-gas-works/">gas canisters</a>), or as a powder (such as pepper balls). This definition distinguishes tear gas from personal self-defence sprays which use foams, gels and liquids.</p> <p>Tear gas canisters typically contain the irritants 2-chlorobenzalmalononitrile (CS) and phenacyl chloride (CN). Both CS and CN are man-made chemicals discovered in a lab, unlike capsaicin (the traditional ingredient in pepper spray).</p> <p>But despite capsaicin coming from chilli peppers, pepper spray is still a weaponised irritant that can be delivered as an aerosol or powder. It should unequivocally be considered a type of tear gas.</p> <p><strong>Pepper spray as a weapon</strong></p> <p>The chemical irritants OC, CS and CN have military symbols because they are chemical weapons. They are termed “<a href="https://www.wbur.org/news/2020/06/10/rubber-bullets-protesters-victoria-snelgrove-boston">less-lethal</a>” because they are less likely to kill than conventional weapons. Their use, however, can still <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/judystone/2020/06/08/tear-gas-and-pepper-spray-can-maim-kill-and-spread-coronavirus/#47f17a2a725f">cause fatalities</a>.</p> <p>Technically, pepper spray and other tear gases are classified as lachrymatory agents. <a href="https://theconversation.com/what-is-tear-gas-139958">Lachrymatory agents</a> attack mucous membranes in the eyes and respiratory system.</p> <p>Pepper spray works almost instantly, forcing the eyes to close and flood with tears. Coupled with coughing fits and difficulty breathing, this means the targeted person is effectively <a href="https://healthland.time.com/2011/11/22/how-painful-is-pepper-spray/">blinded and incapacitated</a>. Because lachrymatory agents work on <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK544263/">nerve receptors</a> that help us sense heat, they also induce an intense burning sensation.</p> <p>The combined effects of pepper spray can last anywhere from 15 minutes to more than an hour.</p> <p>Lachrymatory agents emerged on the <a href="https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/germans-introduce-poison-gas">battlefields of World War I</a>. Artillery shells were filled with chemicals such as <a href="https://www.compoundchem.com/2014/05/17/chemical-warfare-ww1/">xylyl bromide and chloroacetone</a> and fired at enemy soldiers. Agents that induce choking, blistering and vomiting were added as the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/10/science/chemical-weapons-world-war-1-armistice.html">chemical arms race</a> escalated.</p> <p>In the 1920s, the <a href="https://www.un.org/disarmament/wmd/bio/1925-geneva-protocol/">Geneva Protocol</a> was enacted to ban the use of indiscriminate and often ineffective chemical weapons on the battlefield. Today, the unjustified use of chemical riot control agents <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/opinion/2012/04/201242913130963418.html">threatens to erode</a> the systems that are meant to protect us from the most dangerous weaponised chemicals.</p> <p><em>Written by Gabriel da Silva. ​Nurse collapses and dies mysteriously while walking the dog

<p><span>The family of a “brilliant and caring” nurse is mourning her death after she tragically collapsed and died while taking her dog out for a stroll.</span><br /><br /><span>Jane Baxter, 43, a single mum from Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool, passed away while she took her family pet out for a walk on June 2.</span><br /><br /><span>Her two devastated children Isabelle, 14 and Harry, 11 are both struggling to come to terms with the loss of their wonderful mum.</span><br /><br /><span>Jane’s sister, Sue Baxter, 53, said that she had received a call early in the morning to say her sister had been rushed to hospital after collapsing.</span><br /><br /><span>“She went out for a walk and didn’t come home,” she devastatingly recounted.</span><br /><br /><span>“I got a call to say she had collapsed on the road and an ambulance had been called.”</span><br /><br /><span>Emergency services arrived in Litherland where Jane collapsed near her home and took her to Fazakerley Hospital, where she died later after never regaining consciousness.</span><br /><br /><span>Jane's death is not being treated as coronavirus related but the cause is yet to be found.</span><br /><br /><span>Results could take six months before any answers or comfort can be given to Jane’s heartbroken family.</span><br /><br /><span>To help with funeral costs and to aid Jane’s two children for their future, the family have put together a GoFundMe.</span><br /><br /><span>“Jane was a vibrant, compassionate and caring person to all who knew her,” the page read.</span><br /><br /><span>"Jane's passing was so sudden, Harry and Issy never got the chance to hug or say goodbye to their beautiful mum.</span><br /><br /><span>"As a single mum, Jane always made sure her children never went without and worked hard to give them the best life possible.</span><br /><br /><span>"Living with her lovely mum Jean, they all shared plenty of love and laughter.</span><br /><br /><span>"As friends who experienced Jane's warmth &amp; kindness, we would like to raise as much as possible to help Harry and Issy through these terrible and distressing times.</span><br /><br /><span>"It may just be a day out, a pair of shoe mum would have bought, Xmas and birthday gifts etc that a mother may buy her children.</span><br /><br /><span>"All funds raised will help these children through times such as school proms and events in life where mum would have been their side by side with her two favourite sidekicks."</span><br /><br /><span>The family told the Echo that Jane qualified as a nurse in 2003 and worked on the High Dependency Unit (HDU) in Alder Hey.</span><br /><br /><span>They described her as a “brilliant, caring” nurse who lived for her children.</span></p>

Coronavirus and asthma: What we know so far

<p>When the new coronavirus arrived in early 2020, people with asthma were identified as being at <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/staying-alert-and-safe-social-distancing/staying-alert-and-safe-social-distancing">higher risk</a> from the disease. Judgements about who was at increased risk had to be made on the best available evidence – which wasn’t much. Data from China was only just emerging and COVID-19 had yet to reach pandemic status.</p> <p>Given that <a href="https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/asthma/">asthma is a lung disease</a> and <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/apr/15/what-happens-to-your-lungs-with-coronavirus-covid-19">COVID-19 targets the lungs</a>, it made sense that people with asthma would be considered at higher risk, as they are from <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/flu/highrisk/asthma.htm#:%7E:text=Flu%20infection%20in%20the%20lungs,who%20do%20not%20have%20asthma.">other respiratory illnesses</a>. But as more data emerged, the picture became less clear.</p> <p>Hospital data represents the tip of the iceberg when it comes to COVID-19 infections. Most people who are infected won’t be ill enough to be sent to hospital. Some <a href="https://www.acpjournals.org/doi/10.7326/M20-3012">won’t even know they have the disease</a>. But without sustained and widespread testing, it’s the only data available.</p> <p>Early studies from <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32294485/">China</a> and <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/69/wr/mm6913e2.htm">the US</a> showed that the proportion of people with asthma coming to hospital with COVID-19 was lower than the proportion of people with asthma in the general population. Yet <a href="https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.04.23.20076042v1.full.pdf">data from the UK</a> suggests people with asthma are neither over nor underrepresented in hospitalised patients with COVID-19.</p> <p>It is still possible that people with asthma are more likely to be admitted to hospital with COVID-19 than people without asthma, but issues with the studies are providing an inaccurate picture. It is also possible that the early findings might be genuine, and due to differences in immune responses or protective effects of certain asthma medications.</p> <p>It is clear that risks from COVID-19 depend on a lot more than whether or not you have asthma, but most of the available data doesn’t go into this very much. People with <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/need-extra-precautions/asthma.html">more severe forms of asthma</a> are considered at higher risk. There is hardly any information on how asthma might affect COVID-19 infection in young people because so few children become seriously ill with COVID-19.</p> <p>Once in hospital, <a href="https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.05.06.20092999v1.full.pdf">preliminary data from the UK</a> shows that asthma is associated with an increased risk of dying with COVID-19.</p> <p>Risks appear higher in people recently prescribed <a href="https://www.asthma.org.uk/advice/inhalers-medicines-treatments/steroids/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIrqCJxMzi6QIVBbTtCh3TdgTNEAAYASAAEgIewPD_BwE">oral corticosteroids</a>, which is one type of medication used for asthma. This does not necessarily mean oral corticosteroids themselves increase COVID-19 risk. People with more severe asthma are more likely to be prescribed these medications than people with less severe asthma and, as noted above, people with more severe asthma are considered at higher risk from COVID-19. In fact, some have speculated that oral corticosteroids might help protect against COVID-19, but the <a href="https://www.cebm.net/covid-19/inhaled-steroids-in-asthma-during-the-covid-19-outbreak/">evidence for this is unclear</a>.</p> <p><strong>What the guidance says</strong></p> <p>As well as the direct risks that COVID-19 infection poses to people with asthma, disruptions and changes brought on by the pandemic may affect asthma outcomes. Diagnosing and routinely monitoring asthma relies on a range of tests administered in face-to-face visits. But, to cut the risks of virus transmission, a lot of these services have been reduced.</p> <p><a href="https://www.asthma.org.uk/advice/triggers/coronavirus-covid-19/what-should-people-with-asthma-do-now/#AsthmaCare">Asthma UK</a> has guidance on what people might expect from their usual asthma care at the moment. <a href="https://www.cebm.net/covid-19/asthma-and-covid-19-risks-and-management-considerations/">The advice</a> is that people manage their asthma as well as possible to reduce risk from COVID-19. This includes restarting or continuing prescribed medications and avoiding known triggers, such as air pollution and cigarette smoke.</p> <p>Some countries now recommend that people wear a face covering (not a surgical mask) in certain settings. Wearing a face covering may be difficult for some people with asthma, and the UK government has advised that people with respiratory conditions don’t need to wear face coverings <a href="https://www.asthma.org.uk/advice/triggers/coronavirus-covid-19/what-should-people-with-asthma-do-now/">if it is difficult for them to do so</a>.</p> <p>Finally, it’s worth noting that this pandemic has the potential to affect <a href="https://www.nhs.uk/oneyou/every-mind-matters/coronavirus-covid-19-staying-at-home-tips/">mental health and wellbeing</a> and that this may be even more of a risk for people with <a href="https://www.cebm.net/covid-19/supporting-people-with-long-term-conditions-ltcs-during-national-emergencies/">long-term conditions</a>, such as asthma. Anxiety and depression are associated with worse asthma control.</p> <p>The charity, <a href="https://www.asthma.org.uk/coronavirus/">Asthma UK</a>, recommends people with asthma stay active, look after their health, stay social, and ask for support.</p> <p>While research continues to establish who is at high risk from COVID-19 infection, it’s important not to lose sight of the broader ways in which this pandemic may affect people with asthma – and the fact that some groups of people will be <a href="https://www.asthma.org.uk/dd78d558/globalassets/get-involved/external-affairs-campaigns/publications/health-inequality/auk-health-inequalities-final.pdf">more affected than others</a>. Both asthma and COVID-19 disproportionately affect people from more deprived communities and people from non-white ethnic groups. New ways of managing asthma will need to be found and they must be designed to minimise the impact of this double burden wherever possible.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. <p><span>Doctors have made a disturbing yet remarkable discovery inside of a man’s bladder.</span><br /><br /><span>X-ray scans showed the 30-year-old man, who was treated in Guwahati Hospital, India had a 61 cm-long charger cable that became entangled in his bladder.</span><br /><br /><span>The medical professionals believe it may have been swallowed or inserted for "sexual gratification".</span><br /><br /><span>The adult male, who is said to have a “history of accidental ingestion of headphones”, visited the doctors after complaints of incessant abdominal pain.</span><br /><br /><span>He was given a two-day course of laxatives in a bid to alleviate the stomach pain before doctors decided to made a small incision into his gastrointestinal tract.</span><br /><br /><span>It was then that doctors had the disturbing realisation that there was the charger cord in the man’s bladder.</span></p> <p><img style="width: 500px; height: 281.25px;" src="https://oversixtydev.blob.core.windows.net/media/7836435/doctor-bladder-1.jpg" alt="" data-udi="umb://media/e676a4c5383142cd824218d7a82baa5d" /></p> <p><em><span class="CmCaReT" style="display: none;">�</span>Image: Yahoo</em><br /><br /><span>Five medics performed a 45 minute surgery to remove it.</span><br /><br /><span>Surgeon Wallie Islam, who says he had not seen anything of the sort in his 25-year career, went on to say that surgeons didn’t want to jump straight into surgery and that’s why he was given laxatives.</span><br /><br /><span>"The patient's stool was examined, but nothing came out,” Dr Islam said.</span><br /><br /><span>"We decided to do a small incision and check the gastrointestinal tract.”</span><br /><br /><span>The doctor added the male “might have been uncomfortable telling the truth”, leading to the team searching his gastrointestinal tract.</span><br /><br /><span>"Though I'm not exactly sure about his mental health, some people do things for sexual gratification, but this man took things a little too far,” he said.</span><br /><br /><span>The man spent three days recovering in hospital before he was released.</span></p>

Scientists around the world are already fighting the next pandemic

<p>If a two-year-old child living in poverty in India or Bangladesh gets sick with a common bacterial infection, there is <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4775002/">more than a 50%</a> chance an antibiotic treatment will fail. Somehow the child has acquired an antibiotic resistant infection – even to drugs to which they may never have been exposed. How?</p> <p>Unfortunately, this child also lives in a place with limited clean water and less waste management, bringing them into frequent contact with faecal matter. This means they are regularly exposed to millions of resistant genes and bacteria, including potentially <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/pdfs/journals/lanplh/PIIS2542-5196(18)30186-4.pdf">untreatable superbugs</a>. This sad story is shockingly common, especially in places where pollution is rampant and clean water is limited.</p> <p>For many years, people believed antibiotic resistance in bacteria was primarily driven by imprudent use of antibiotics in clinical and veterinary settings. But <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S016041201832587X?via%3Dihub">growing evidence</a> suggests that environmental factors may be of equal or greater importance to the spread of <a href="https://theconversation.com/to-defeat-superbugs-everyone-will-need-access-to-clean-water-95202">antibiotic resistance</a>, especially in the developing world.</p> <p>Here we focus on antibiotic resistant bacteria, but drug resistance also occurs in types of other microorganisms – such as resistance in pathogenic viruses, fungi, and protozoa (called antimicrobial resistance or AMR). This means that our ability to treat all sorts of infectious disease is increasingly hampered by resistance, potentially including coronaviruses like SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19.</p> <p>Overall, use of antibiotics, antivirals, and antifungals clearly must be reduced, but in most of the world, improving water, sanitation, and hygiene practice – a practice known as WASH – is also critically important. If we can ensure cleaner water and safer food everywhere, the spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria will be reduced across the environment, including within and between people and animals.</p> <p>As <a href="https://www.who.int/water_sanitation_health/publications/wash-wastewater-management-to-prevent-infections-and-reduce-amr/en/">recent recommendations on AMR</a> from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), and World Health Organization (WHO) suggest, to which David contributed, the “superbug problem” will not be solved by more prudent antibiotic use alone. It also requires global improvements in water quality, sanitation, and hygiene. Otherwise, the next pandemic might be worse than COVID-19.</p> <p><strong>Bacteria under stress</strong></p> <p>To understand the problem of resistance, we must go back to basics. What is antibiotic resistance, and why does it develop?</p> <p>Exposure to antibiotics puts stress on bacteria and, like other living organisms, they defend themselves. Bacteria do this by sharing and acquiring defence genes, often from other bacteria in their environment. This allows them to change quickly, readily obtaining the ability to make proteins and other molecules that block the antibiotic’s effect.</p> <p>This <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21711367">gene sharing process</a> is natural and is a large part of what drives evolution. However, as we use ever stronger and more diverse antibiotics, new and more powerful bacterial defence options have evolved, rendering some bacteria resistant to almost everything – the ultimate outcome being untreatable superbugs.</p> <p>Antibiotic resistance has existed <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/nature10388">since life began</a>, but has recently accelerated due to human use. When you take an antibiotic, it kills a large majority of the target bacteria at the site of infection – and so you get better. But antibiotics do not kill all the bacteria – some are naturally resistant; others acquire resistance genes from their microbial neighbours, especially in our digestive systems, throat, and on our skin. This means that some resistant bacteria always survive, and can pass to the environment via inadequately treated faecal matter, spreading resistant bacteria and genes wider.</p> <p>The pharmaceutical industry initially responded to increasing resistance by developing new and stronger antibiotics, but bacteria evolve rapidly, making even new antibiotics lose their effectiveness quickly. As a result, new antibiotic development has almost stopped because it garners <a href="https://theconversation.com/big-pharma-has-failed-the-antibiotic-pipeline-needs-to-be-taken-under-public-ownership-126058">limited profit</a>. Meanwhile, resistance to existing antibiotics continues to increase, which especially impacts places with <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanplh/article/PIIS2542-5196%2818%2930186-4/fulltext">poor water quality and sanitation</a>.</p> <p>This is because in the developed world you defecate and your poo goes down the toilet, eventually flowing down a sewer to a community wastewater treatment plant. Although treatment plants are not perfect, they typically reduce resistance levels by well over 99%, substantially reducing resistance released to the environment.</p> <p>In contrast, over <a href="https://www.unicef.org/reports/progress-on-drinking-water-sanitation-and-hygiene-2019">70% of the world</a> has no community wastewater treatment or even sewers; and most faecal matter, containing resistant genes and bacteria, goes directly into surface and groundwater, often via open drains.</p> <p>This means that people who live in places without faecal waste management are regularly exposed to antibiotic resistance in many ways. Exposure is even possible of people who may not have taken antibiotics, like our child in South Asia.</p> <p><strong>Spreading through faeces</strong></p> <p>Antibiotic resistance is everywhere, but it is not surprising that resistance <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30177008%20and%20https://www.thelancet.com/pdfs/journals/lanplh/PIIS2542-5196(18)30186-4.pdf">is greatest</a> in places with poor sanitation because factors other than use are important. For example, a fragmented civil infrastructure, political corruption, and a lack of centralised healthcare also play key roles.</p> <p>One might cynically argue that “foreign” resistance is a local issue, but antibiotic resistance spread knows no boundaries – superbugs might develop in one place due to pollution, but then become global due to international travel. Researchers from Denmark compared antibiotic resistance genes in long-haul airplane toilets and found <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/srep11444">major differences in resistance carriage</a> among flight paths, suggesting resistance can jump-spread by travel.</p> <p>The world’s current experience with the spread of SARS-CoV-2 shows just how fast infectious agents can move with human travel. The impact of increasing antibiotic resistance is no different. There are no reliable antiviral agents for SARS-CoV-2 treatment, which is the way things may become for currently treatable diseases if we allow resistance to continue unchecked.</p> <p>As an example of antibiotic resistance, the “superbug” gene, blaNDM-1, was first detected in <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21478057">India</a> in 2007 (although it was probably present in other regional countries). But soon thereafter, it was found in a <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2786356/">hospital patient in Sweden</a> and then <a href="https://academic.oup.com/jac/article/66/9/1998/768777">in Germany</a>. It was ultimately detected in 2013 in Svalbard in <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S016041201832587X?via%3Dihub">the High Arctic</a>. In parallel, <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24521347">variants</a> of this gene appeared locally, but have evolved as they move. Similar evolution has occurred as <a href="https://www.pnas.org/content/early/2020/04/07/2004999117">the COVID-19 virus</a> has spread.</p> <p>Relative to antibiotic resistance, humans are not the only “travellers” that can carry resistance. Wildlife, such as migratory birds, can also acquire resistant bacteria and genes from contaminated water or soils and then fly great distances carrying resistance in their gut from places with poor water quality to places with good water quality. During travel, they defecate along their path, potentially planting resistance almost anywhere. The global trade of foods also facilitates spread of resistance from country to country and across the globe.</p> <p>What is tricky is that the spread by resistance by travel is often invisible. In fact, the dominant pathways of international resistance spread <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30924539">are largely unknown</a> because many pathways overlap, and the types and drivers of resistance are diverse.</p> <p>Resistant bacteria are not the only infectious agents that might be spread by environmental contamination. SARS-CoV-2 has been found in faeces and inactive virus debris found in sewage, but all evidence suggests water is <a href="https://www.who.int/publications-detail/modes-of-transmission-of-virus-causing-covid-19-implications-for-ipc-precaution-recommendations">not a major route</a> of COVID-19 spread – although there are limited data from places with poor sanitation.</p> <p>So, each case differs. But there are common roots to disease spread – pollution, poor water quality, and inadequate hygiene. Using fewer antibiotics is critical to reducing resistance. However, without also providing safer sanitation and improved water quality at global scales, resistance will continue to increase, potentially creating the next pandemic. Such a combined approach is central to the new WHO/FAO/OIE recommendations on AMR.</p> <p><strong>Other types of pollution and hospital waste</strong></p> <p>Industrial wastes, hospitals, farms, and agriculture are also possible sources or drivers of antibiotic resistance.</p> <p>For example, about ten years ago, one of us (David) studied metal pollution in a Cuban river and <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/es102473z">found</a> the highest levels of resistant genes were near a leaky solid waste landfill and below where pharmaceutical factory wastes entered the river. The factory releases clearly impacted resistance levels downstream, but it was metals from the landfill that most strongly correlated with resistance gene levels in the river.</p> <p>There is a logic to this because toxic metals can stress bacteria, which makes the bacteria stronger, incidentally making them more resistant to anything, including antibiotics. We saw the same thing with metals in <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10.1021/acs.est.7b03797">Chinese landfills</a> where resistance gene levels in the landfill drains strongly correlated with metals, not antibiotics.</p> <p>In fact, pollution of almost any sort can promote antibiotic resistance, including metals, biocides, pesticides, and other chemicals entering the environment. Many pollutants can promote resistance in bacteria, so reducing pollution in general will help reduce antibiotic resistance – an example of which is reducing metal pollution.</p> <p>Hospitals are also important, being both reservoirs and incubators for many varieties of antibiotic resistance, including well known resistant bacteria such as Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). While resistant bacteria are not necessarily acquired in hospitals (most are brought in from the community), resistant bacteria can be enriched in hospitals because they are where people are very sick, cared for in close proximity, and often provided “last resort” antibiotics. Such conditions allow the spread of resistant bacteria easier, especially superbug strains because of the types of antibiotics that are used.</p> <p>Wastewater releases from hospitals also may be a concern. <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/31295654">Recent data</a> showed that “typical” bacteria in hospital sewage carry five to ten times more resistant genes per cell than community sources, especially genes more readily shared between bacteria. This is problematic because such bacteria are sometimes superbug strains, such as those resistant to <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28949542">carbapenem antibiotics</a>. Hospital wastes are a particular concern in places without effective community wastewater treatment.</p> <p>Another critical source of antibiotic resistance is agriculture and aquaculture. Drugs used in veterinary care can be very similar (sometimes identical) to the antibiotics used in human medicine. And so resistant bacteria and genes <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30924539">are found</a> in animal manure, soils, and drainage water. This is potentially significant given that animals produce <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41893-018-0167-0?WT.feed_name=subjects_environmental-sciences">four times more</a> faeces than humans at a global scale.</p> <p>Wastes from agricultural activity also can be especially problematic because waste management is usually less sophisticated. Additionally, agricultural operations are often at very large scales and less containable due to greater exposure to wildlife. Finally, antibiotic resistance can spread from farm animals to farmers to food workers, which has been seen in <a href="https://doi.org/10.2807/1560-7917.ES.2015.20.37.30021">recent European studies</a>, meaning this can be important at local scales.</p> <p>These examples show that pollution in general increases the spread of resistance. But the examples also show that dominant drivers will differ based on where you are. In one place, resistance spread might be fuelled by human faecal contaminated water; whereas, in another, it might be industrial pollution or agricultural activity. So local conditions are key to reducing the spread of antibiotic resistance, and optimal solutions will differ from place to place – single solutions do not fit all.</p> <p>Locally driven national action plans are therefore essential – which the new <a href="https://www.who.int/water_sanitation_health/publications/wash-wastewater-management-to-prevent-infections-and-reduce-amr/en/">WHO/FAO/OIE guidance</a> strongly recommends. In some places, actions might focus on healthcare systems; whereas, in many places, promoting cleaner water and safer food also is critical.</p> <p><strong>Simple steps</strong></p> <p>It is clear we must use a holistic approach (what is now called “<a href="https://www.cdc.gov/onehealth/basics/index.html">One Health</a>”) to reduce the spread of resistance across people, animals, and the environment. But how do we do this in a world that is so unequal? It is now accepted that clean water is a human right embedded in the UN’s 2030 <a href="https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/sdg6">Agenda for Sustainable Development</a>. But how can we achieve affordable “clean water for all” in a world where geopolitics often outweigh local needs and realities?</p> <p>Global improvements in sanitation and hygiene should bring the world <a href="https://www.who.int/water_sanitation_health/publications/wash-wastewater-management-to-prevent-infections-and-reduce-amr/en/">closer to solving the problem of antibiotic resistance</a>. But such improvements should only be the start. Once improved sanitation and hygiene exist at global scales, our reliance on antibiotics will decline due to more equitable access to clean water. In theory, clean water coupled with decreased use of antibiotics will drive a downward spiral in resistance.</p> <p>This is not impossible. We know of a village in Kenya where they simply moved their water supply up a small hill – above rather than near their latrines. Hand washing with soap and water was also mandated. A year later, antibiotic use in the village was negligible because so few villagers were unwell. This success is partly due to the remote location of the village and very proactive villagers. But it shows that clean water and improved hygiene can directly translate into reduced antibiotic use and resistance.</p> <p>This story from Kenya further shows how simple actions can be a critical first step in reducing global resistance. But such actions must be done everywhere and at multiple levels to solve the global problem. This is not cost-free and requires international cooperation – including focused apolitical policy, planning, and infrastructure and management practices.</p> <p>Some well intended groups have attempted to come up with novel solutions, but those solutions are often too technological. And western “off-the-shelf” water and wastewater technologies are rarely optimal for use in developing countries. They are often too complex and costly, but also require maintenance, spare parts, operating skill, and cultural buy-in to be sustainable. For example, building an advanced activated sludge wastewater treatment plant in a place where 90% of the population does not have sewer connections makes no sense.</p> <p>Simple is more sustainable. As an obvious example, we need to reduce open defecation in a cheap and socially acceptable manner. This is the best immediate solution in places with limited or unused sanitation infrastructure, such as <a href="https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/southasia/2018/08/08/book-review-where-india-goes-abandoned-toilets-stunted-development-and-the-costs-of-caste-by-diane-coffey-and-dean-spears/">rural India</a>. Innovation is without doubt important, but it needs to be tailored to local realities to stand a chance of being sustained into the future.</p> <p>Strong leadership and governance is also critical. Antibiotic resistance is <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanplh/article/PIIS2542-5196(18)30186-4/fulltext">much lower</a> in places with less corruption and strong governance. Resistance also is lower in places with greater public health expenditure, which implies social policy, community action, and local leadership can be as important as technical infrastructure.</p> <p><strong>Why aren’t we solving the problem?</strong></p> <p>While solutions to antibiotic resistance exist, integrated cooperation between science and engineering, medicine, social action, and governance is lacking. While many international organisations acknowledge the scale of the problem, unified global action is not happening fast enough.</p> <p>There are various reasons for this. Researchers in healthcare, the sciences, and engineering are rarely on the same page, and experts <a href="https://theconversation.com/why-we-should-expect-scientists-to-disagree-about-antibiotic-resistance-and-other-controversies-82609">often disagree</a> over what should be prioritised to prevent antibiotic resistance – this muddles guidance. Unfortunately, many antibiotic resistance researchers also sometimes sensationalise their results, only reporting bad news or exaggerating results.</p> <p>Science continues to reveal probable causes of antibiotic resistance, which shows no single factor drives resistance evolution and spread. As such, a strategy incorporating medicine, environment, sanitation, and public health is needed to provide the best solutions. Governments throughout the world must act in unison to meet targets for sanitation and hygiene in accordance with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.</p> <p>Richer countries must work with poorer ones. But, actions against resistance should focus on local needs and plans because each country is different. We need to remember that resistance is everyone’s problem and all countries have a role in solving the problem. This is evident from the COVID-19 pandemic, where some countries have displayed <a href="https://ec.europa.eu/international-partnerships/topics/eu-global-response-covid-19_en">commendable cooperation</a>. Richer countries should invest in helping to provide locally suitable waste management options for poorer ones – ones that can be maintained and sustained. This would have a more immediate impact than any “toilet of the future” technology.</p> <p>And it’s key to remember that the global antibiotic resistance crisis does not exist in isolation. Other global crises overlap resistance; such as climate change. If the climate becomes warmer and dryer in parts of the world with limited sanitation infrastructure, greater antibiotic resistance might ensue due to higher exposure concentrations. In contrast, if greater flooding occurs in other places, an increased risk of untreated faecal and other wastes spreading across whole landscapes will occur, increasing antibiotic resistance exposures in an unbounded manner.</p> <p>Antibiotic resistance will also impact on the fight against COVID-19. As an example, secondary bacterial infections are common in seriously ill patients with COVID-19, especially when admitted to an ICU. So if such pathogens are resistant to critical antibiotic therapies, they will not work and result <a href="https://www.medpagetoday.com/infectiousdisease/covid19/86192">in higher death rates</a>.</p> <p>Regardless of context, improved water, sanitation, and hygiene must be the backbone of <a href="https://www.who.int/water_sanitation_health/publications/wash-wastewater-management-to-prevent-infections-and-reduce-amr/en/">stemming the spread of AMR, including antibiotic resistance</a>, to avoid the next pandemic. Some progress is being made in terms of global cooperation, but efforts are still too fragmented. Some countries are making progress, whereas others are not.</p> <p>Resistance needs to be seen in a similar light to other global challenges – something that threatens human existence and the planet. As with addressing climate change, protecting biodiversity, or COVID-19, global cooperation is needed to reduce the evolution and spread of resistance. Cleaner water and improved hygiene are the key. Police investigate the welfare of re-homed autistic child of YouTube influencers

<p><span>Police have confirmed they are looking into the welfare and whereabouts of the adopted son of YouTube couple Myka and James Stauffer, who they admitted they “re-homed” with another family.</span><br /><br /><span>Myka sparked fury online when she came forward on her YouTube channel to announce she had sent her adopted son Huxley, five, to live with another family after his special needs meant that they could no longer provide the best support for him.</span><br /><br /><span>The couple adopted Huxley from China in 2016, and did not shy away from sharing the process on Myka's YouTube channel.</span><br /><br /><span>Though they were told the boy suffered from brain tumours, it was later revealed to the family that the young boy has level three autism and a sensory processing disorder, the result of having a stroke in utero.</span></p> <p><img style="width: 500px; height: 281.25px;" src="https://oversixtydev.blob.core.windows.net/media/7836396/myka-stauffer-2.jpg" alt="" data-udi="umb://media/410fbb6f9d404221ac32968c2f25ddaf" /></p> <p><em>Image: Instagram</em><br /><br /><span>Myka and James announced that they had sent Huxley to live with a family better equipped to handle his needs in a video that went viral last week.</span><br /><br /><span>Fans promptly accused the pair of "re-homing" him because of his autism.</span><br /><br /><span>It has also since raised questions about Huxley's whereabouts since leaving the Stauffer family.</span><br /><br /><span>The Delaware, US County Sheriff's Office is looking into the case alongside “several other agencies”, according to BuzzFeed News.</span><br /><br /><span>Tracy Whited, the office's community and media relations manager, said that the case is ongoing but was able to confirm that the five-year-old boy “is not missing”.</span><br /><br /><span>“All adoption cases are confidential, and must go through a thorough process, with specific requirements and safeguards,” Whited said.</span></p> <p><img style="width: 500px; height: 281.25px;" src="https://oversixtydev.blob.core.windows.net/media/7836397/myka-stauffer-1.jpg" alt="" data-udi="umb://media/64ab6f6e927345fa9b1eb7f6f5a2bda8" /></p> <p><em>Myka and her husband took to Youtube to reveal they had "rehomed" their son Huxley. </em><br /><br /><span>“In private adoptions there are the same legal requirements that must be adhered to. The potato trick to help get rid of neck pain and migraines

<p>An expert has revealed an unlikely item that serves to relieve neck pain and migraines.</p> <p>Those dealing with neck stiffness could use humble potatoes to treat themselves, said Stephen Makinde, the clinical director of Perfect Balance Clinic in London.</p> <p>“We’ve seen an increase in the number of clients with neck problems and migraines associated with neck stiffness since the start of the coronavirus lockdown,” Makinde told the <em><a href="https://www.dailystar.co.uk/health/bizarre-baking-potato-trick-could-22096583">Daily Star</a></em>.</p> <p>The problem could be attributed to increased use of electronic devices during the pandemic, which affects the upper back, he said.</p> <p>“If you are looking down, which you do when working on a laptop, what tends to happen is the head starts to hang forward and that puts a lot of strain on the upper back,” he said.</p> <p>“This can often cause a burning sensation in the trapezius muscles and affects other muscles in the neck, the spine and the nerves.”</p> <p>Makinde said lying down with tennis balls placed underneath the back of the head can help loosen muscles, release tension and help “reset the neck position”.</p> <p>“Tennis balls are really useful for this, but most people don’t have tennis balls at home,” he said.</p> <p>“So baking potatoes work well, too. You just sellotape them together and lie down flat, with the potatoes placed underneath the back of your head.</p> <p>“This is a really easy and useful thing people can do at home to release their neck tension and the pressure around there themselves.”</p> <p>In an interview with <em><a href="https://7news.com.au/sunrise/on-the-show/coronavirus-australia-how-to-prevent-back-and-neck-pain-when-working-from-home-c-1059473">Sunrise</a></em>, Australian Chiropractors Association President Dr Anthony Coxon also recommended getting up and moving every half an hour as well as increasing the height of the screens we are using.</p>
